My first experience with a mobile restroom

We had been invited to a sports event, and there was no way I was missing this for anything.

Besides being there to support our friend, I loved athletics, and the idea of watching athletes perform nearby excited me.

I had broken my legs as a child, and the doctor said that it would be impossible to engage in the extreme sport since the accident had caused a complication that I had to live with for life. I remember defying my parents as a teenager and almost lost my life after my heart almost stopped working. I learned my lesson and decided to channel my passion for the sport to support and cheer those who could engage in it. So you can imagine my joy being at a place I always wanted. It was so thoughtful of my friend to invite me since getting a ticket to this section was almost impossible. Out of my excitement, I drank too much water and was soon unable to hold it back. I needed a restroom fast lest I embarrassed myself. Shockingly, the ground had no permanent toilets, and I had to do with one of the portable restrooms. I found it to be too small, but it was convenient enough for one to use. I had never encountered one of these portable restroom solutions before, and I thought it was a pretty good idea for events such as these. I made a mental note to recommend getting them on our next event since I was an events planner. I took the supplier’s contacts since we had a camping event coming up, and a few extra bathrooms and showers would make the campers’ experience even more fun..

My husband made me handmade furniture.

My son went to a technical school when he was in high school.

I thought it was just a way to get away from a lot of homework and sitting in boring classes. I was surprised to find out that he was actually learning a trade that would give him a career when he graduated. When I thought of woodworking, I pictured the cutesy wood burnt carvings you saw outside of houses, or small trinket boxes. I never thought he would be a craftsman of fine handmade furniture. During his last year of school, he had to have a project for his final grade. He spent the entire year working on his project, and he never talked about it. I knew he was working part-time so he could afford to do his project. I had seen some of the handmade projects he had done in the last two years, and I was impressed. He made a river dining table for my sister, one year. The following year he made an oak rocking chair for his grandmother. The project he was doing this year had to be something amazing. I was sure that he had a future in creating handmade furniture, after he graduated. About a month before graduation, he was coming home at night smelling like wood stains. I asked my husband what project he was working on, and he told me it was a surprise that he wanted to show me on his own. The week before graduation, the parents were invited to a showing of the final projects. I was shocked to see that my son had made me a handmade curly maple coffee table and matching rocking chair for my living room. I embarrassed him when I cried in front of the teacher.

Getting the office that I really wanted

Sometimes, being a dad means choosing between stuff for your teenagers as well as wife over getting stuff for yourself. And really, that’s so cool by me. It feels good to be able to give to them, as well as I’m so grateful to be in that position. The people I was with and I get to live in a good house with high quality heating as well as air conditioning, along with other good amenities. So I have plenty I can be thankful for separate from buying a bunch of stuff. Yet, there are times when you just need to go ahead as well as have a treat yourself. This was the reason I called the Heating, Ventilation plus A/C business about a ductless mini heat pump. Due to the pandemic, I worked at lake house for the better area for the year. While it took some getting accustomed to, I actually found that it fit my lifestyle way better. And I was far more productive than I was in the zone controlled Heating, Ventilation plus A/C in the office. This actually stood out to my bosses as well as they encouraged me to keep focused on doing more of whatever I was doing in the air conditioning of my house. So, I have decided to make this a more permanent situation with occasional trips to the office for important meetings. And I’m fully converting the spare room to my modern office. Part of that is getting customized heating as well as cooling in this office space. That means the Heating, Ventilation plus A/C contractor is coming out to install a ductless mini heat pump in my modern full on lake house office. And I couldn’t be more secretly cheerful. At least 1 single thing that was nice came out of the pandemic. I think where I’m most productive working as well as it appears as if I’m adding some ductless mini split to that equation.

Travel plan B leads to HVAC surprise

Throughout my life, I have pretty much always been up to the challenge.

And this past year has taken just about all I could muster in order to navigate with some positivity.

The pandemic was tough on business this year, as it was for many other business owners. But while we had to pay rent on a zone controlled HVAC office space that virtually no one was using, we still got through what was a big challenge. I’m just thankful that I was able to find a decent alternative to air travel. My business requires that I be onsite regularly for our customers. But even with the HEPA filters, I just wasn’t all that interested with getting on a plane. So I had to find a way to do my job from the air conditioning of home and get to where I had to be. That meant loading up the car, cranking the air conditioning and putting some mega miles on my ride. But it worked out and I adapted to being out on the road for weeks at a time. It was weirdly satisfying in a traveling salesman sort of way. While I missed the quality heating and air of home, I did find a hidden gem I knew nothing about. Due to staying in hotels just off the interstate, I found the perfect HVAC unit type that consistently worked reliably and produced wonderful heating and cooling. Can’t say the same thing for the expensive, downtown hotels by the way. Plus, they were convenient, inexpensive and super clean. Add great heating and cooling, that’s a winner.

Getting the home office I’ve always wanted

That means the HVAC technician is coming out to install a ductless heat pump in my new full on home office.

Sometimes, being dad means maybe choosing stuff for your kids and wife over getting stuff for yourself. And really, that’s so very cool with me. It feels great to be able to provide and I’m grateful to be in that position. We get to live in a great house with quality heating and air along with other great amenities. So I have plenty to be thankful for without buying a bunch of stuff. Yet, there are times when you just need to go ahead and treat yourself. This was the reason I called the HVAC company about a ductless heat pump. Due to the pandemic, I worked at home for the better part of the year. While it took some getting accustomed to, I really found that it fit my life way better. And I was far more productive than I was in the zone controlled HVAC of the office. This really stood out to my bosses and they encouraged me to keep doing more of whatever I was doing in the air conditioning of my house. Part of that is getting customized heating and cooling in this space. That means the HVAC technician is coming out to install a ductless heat pump in my new full on home office. Saving money on heating this year is my aim

So I’m taking a very proactive approach to cutting the costs of my heating bills.

This is a worthy exercise and one that is far overdue.

I just really have never fully committed to the idea of reducing the biggest HVAC bill of the year. I’ve always been committed to doing my best for the HVAC equipment. We are part of an HVAC service plan so they get exceptional, consistent and professional HVAC service. So it sort of felt like I really should take that sort of good move to the next level. And really, while it took a bit of time and energy, it wasn’t a part time job. After having spent 4 winters here, I realize that much of my heating bill problem is a preparation problem. I have part of it down with making sure the HVAC equipment is serviced seasonally. But the house needs preparation as well. And that is what I’m committing to this fall. Its going to start with the seal on my house. That means I’ll be ripping out weather stripping and putting up new. Stopping drafts and HVAC leaks in your house is a huge step toward lowering the heating bill. I’m also going to check the insulation around a few of the windows that feel particularly cold in the winter. I even went outside and sealed up every single gap, crack or space where cold air can get in and hot air gets out. This year, I expect to save at least upwards of 20 percent for these HVAC cost cutting moves.

The winter is coming so is heating maintenance

It’s still plenty warm outside.

And I should know, I’m spending nearly every spare minute outside cutting, splitting and stacking wood for the winter.

Winter weather is such the focal point for those of us in this region that it takes on a year round sort of priority. The wood is the back up and supplement heating system for the winter. I rely mainly on a gas furnace to provide the heating comfort my family is accustomed to. However, with the cost of HVAC heating, the wood stove really helps out. The fact that we live a ways out of town also plays into having a back up for the gas furnace. There are plenty of instances over a winter where the power may go out and stay out for a while. Relying solely on the gas furnace would not be a responsible way to go. Plus, if the gas furnace goes down during a snow storm or something, the HVAC technician may not be able to get to us for a few days. That’s why I spend much of my summer cutting, splitting and stacking wood for heating during the winter. Pretty soon it will be time to call the HVAC company. It’s getting close to the time of year when I like to get the heating maintenance. I make sure the HVAC equipment gets regular HVAC maintenance. This ensures that it runs well, is reliable and working at its most efficiency capacity. Before you know it, that first freeze will be here and then the ground will be blanketed in snow. And that gas furnace will be ready to go to work for the winter.

Imagine what life would be like without air conditioning

Life has been so full of changes and sacrifices that I tend to feel a bit overwhelmed and overcome at times.

It’s like, what’s next right? This is when I take a beat and get some perspective. Sure life is challenging as all get out right now as we seek to find a new normal with the pandemic changing course yet again. But it’s summer and we have air conditioning. Can you imagine what it would be like in this region without HVAC cooling. It’s not hard to do. Just turn it off for an afternoon and you’ll get a little taste. However, most of us couldn’t even get through that. We have gotten to the point where residential HVAC and commercial heating and cooling are simply taken for granted. But it wasn’t all that long ago when there wasn’t any modern HVAC technology in these parts. People got up at 3 in the morning to start their day in order to beat the heat. And when the peak heating hours hit after lunch, all they could do was find some shade and pray for a breeze. That seems completely bizarre to most of us who are forever pushing the thermostat all over the place to get the exact HVAC cooling comfort they need. Yet, there was a time when just having a fan was a very, very big deal. So maybe when things are getting a bit tough to take, give some thanks for the modern HVAC technology that makes our life livable today. That always helps me sort of keep a better perspective as I try to navigate a world I recognize less and less.

Heat pump is a champ for all seasons

The heat pump has been getting the bulk of its work in the past few months. It’s summer in the south so that means lots and lots of heat and humidity. But the heat pump is made for this. Actually, the name of this HVAC equipment says it all. That’s because it truly is a heat pump. The HVAC cooling process starts by this piece of HVAC equipment pumping out heat energy to make room for cooler air to take its place. And it’s not just the HVAC cooling that we rely on with the HVAC cooling process. As the heat pump is moving that heat energy out of the house, it’s taking a bunch of moisture with it. And this allows the humidity levels in the house to balance. There is much more in humidity balance than just comfort. The HVAC cooling process reduces the high humidity and in turn mitigates the environment for mold and mildew growth. That is more than just a comfort issue. That has everything to do with a mold issue as well. But the heat pump is not done there. While for us in this area, the heat pump’s main challenge is cooling the summer temperatures, it’s also great at heating. And when we flip the thermostat over to heating, the heat pump simply reverses the process. It’s now moving heat energy from the ambient outside air into the house. And it can do this to produce heating without supplemental help to temperatures down in the mid 40’s. Where I live, the heat pump doesn’t even have to cycle on all that much to knock the chill out of the house.

Super summer savings on HVAC cooling

For many years, I completely dreaded the summer.

When you live where the heat and humidity are near triple digits every single day for at least four months, you come to dread it.

However, the biggest thing I dreaded about the heat was the cost of HVAC cooling. Utility costs in this area are high so having the air conditioning running night and day will add up. But like my attitude about the summer, I changed just how bad the HVAC cooling bill really had to be. It wasn’t all that tough really. I found everything I needed to know when it came to saving on HVAC cooling in just few minutes online. The basics are easy. It starts with keeping the HVAC treated air on the inside and the heat on the outside. That seems fairly elemental but, in practice, it’s another thing entirely. I make sure the weather stripping is tight and in good shape on all doors, windows and sliders. Then, I make sure there aren’t any interior or exterior gaps that would compromise HVAC efficiency. After that it’s really about making sure the direct sunlight is stopped with shades or drapes. Again, keeping the heat energy out is a big deal. But it’s the thermostat setting that has to be the focal point. And good thermostat setting discipline is what really makes or breaks an HVAC summer cooling budget. While I keep our thermostat in the low 80’s during the day to save max money, I still get to have it at a comfortable setting in the 70’s for sleeping. And I don’t have to dread seeing that utility bill every month.
