Since we’ve moved way down south, we no longer have a need for the gas furnace as part of the winter. Actually, there really isn’t much call for very much HVAC heating in this area. And when we do need a bit of the HVAC heating, the heat pump is more than capable of coming through for us. I wasn’t so sure what we were going to be getting into when it came to trusting both the heating and cooling to the heat pump. But it sure seemed like the vast majority of other homeowners were making the same bet. I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a different form of residential HVAC since I moved down here other than the heat pump. And obviously, it works well or it wouldn’t be quite so universal. Still, when we got that first cold snap, I wanted to find out just how warm the heat pump could be. And it only took a few minutes to realize that our HVAC heating needs were in good hands with the heat pump. Of course, the main output for the heat pump comes in the summer. It’s so much more hot and humid down here than I’ve ever experienced. Yet, the HVAC cooling provided by the heat pump does a stellar job of keeping us comfortable enough to manage the summer. I have to say that given what I know now, I would definitely trade a gas furnace for the heat pump again. That’s as long as it came with a move to warmer winters like the one I’m experiencing now.

Not sure how it’s really possible but I live in a region that sees some of the worst temperatures from both winter and spring. This means that we really have to have reliable and maintained HVAC equipment. The winter is such that we have to use a gas furnace to get through the deep freeze that is our winter. And that winter seems to go on and on, month after month. So there are plenty of HVAC heating bills to be dealt with. But what’s even stranger is that we seem to just go straight into summer. The spring around here is both brief and fickle. One spring day may allow us to open up the windows to refresh the house. And the next, the gas furnace may be back in high gear. But soon, the air conditioning is on as we need plenty of HVAC cooling in order to deal with the high heat and humidity. Last spring was so strange with all the temperature fluctuations that I forgot to call the HVAC company for the air conditioning tune-up for spring. And of course, that ended up not going so well for me. When I flipped the thermostat over to HVAC cooling, it was fine at first. Then, there was a sort of weird sound that was followed by the heat pump simply shutting off. The HVAC technician made short work of the problem and we had the HVAC cooling back on line fairly quickly. However, had I gotten the HVAC maintenance done, it wouldn’t have happened at all. Not making that same mistake this abbreviated spring.

I do my best to simplify the stuff in my life.

There is no use or value to stressing over much of anything.

But to stress over stuff that you don’t fully understand is just dumb. So I do my best to get all the facts to a challenge before I start trying to figure things out. Well, with a recent HVAC equipment upgrade, I failed at that quite miserably. The HVAC technician did a great thing by giving us plenty of warning when it came to the demise of our HVAC equipment. This gave us time not only to save some money for the replacement but to get the details ironed out with the HVAC company. And this is where I completely dropped the ball. Instead of going directly to the HVAC company that we have dealt with for years, I simply went online. I had the model and brand of the old HVAC unit so I figured that I could just find what I needed online at a discount. What I didn’t know was that the size of the HVAC equipment is essential. Had I just gone to the HVAC company, they would have inspected our home first. And that would have revealed that the ductwork was not going to fit with the HVAC unit that I had chosen. But I didn’t do that and this was brought to my attention after I had purchased the HVAC unit. That’s what I mean about failing ever so miserably at this HVAC replacement. We had to start over but the HVAC company helped me unload the HVAC unit that wouldn’t work.

There was just so much good about my parents. When I think back about that pair of people, I realize just how lucky I am to have had all that time with them. So it dawned on me that maybe I would reinstitute a favorite holiday tradition of my parents. And I started with the HVAC technician. Since we moved to this are some fifteen years ago, we’ve only had one HVAC company. They were so great from the jump that it seemed silly to even look and compare when it came to other HVAC professionals. From the beginning, we joined the HVAC service plan. To do anything else just seemed foolish. The HVAC service plan entitled us to HVAC maintenance in the fall and in the spring. We also were covered if there was any sort of HVAC breakdown. As part of the HVAC service plan, we only have to pay for parts if something goes awry. The HVAC company picks up the service charge. When we set the date for this years heating maintenance, I decided then that we’d do what my parents always did. They made sure that they always offered a holiday bonus to all the service people who helped us out. Even though they didn’t have much money, they always paid it forward. So when the HVAC technician came for the heating maintenance on the gas furnace, I gave him the bonus. The HVAC professional initially tried to refuse it but I explained that this was a way for me to honor my parents. He got it and promised to pay it forward himself.

It was like the third or fourth time I had received this offer from the local HVAC company. We belong to the HVAC service plan offered by our local HVAC company. And with that, we get HVAC maintenance in the fall and again in the spring. Plus, if there is any sort of issue with the HVAC equipment outside of those HVAC maintenance appointments, I don’t pay. Well, if there is a need for an HVAC repair, I only have to pay for the cost of the parts. The HVAC company picks up the service charge. However, as a member of the HVAC service plan, I often get offers that are exclusive to those in the HVAC service plan. And while I ignore most of those emails, I chose to go take them up on the ductwork cleaning. I knew this was something that we hadn’t had done in our home since we moved in. So it seemed high time to have the ductwork cleaning done. What I didn’t realize was that ductwork cleaning is about more than just clean HVAC air ducts. The ductwork cleaning helps improve the indoor air quality of the home for sure. But then there is the ductwork resealing that the HVAC professionals do once the ductwork cleaning is complete. And that is simply resealing the ductwork joints to prevent more debris from getting into the air ducts. Yet, this resealing of the ductwork also vastly improves the efficiency of the HVAC equipment by stopping all those wasterful air leaks. I was stunned by how clean the air was in our house. But when the electric bill came, I was so thrilled to see the HVAC savings.

That’s something that we actually rely upon pretty heavily in both our home life and our work life.

In fact, my wife and I are both in the technology field as it were. She works from the zone controlled HVAC comfort of offices downtown where she manages a slew of people. I work as an IT consultant for many top corporations. But I work from the normal air conditioning of my house. The fact that we are both so into cutting edge technology, it’s sort of surprising that it took me this long to get the smart thermostat. Up till this fall, I’ve always either programmed the old digital thermostat or took care of the thermostat myself. Since I’m at home each day, it only made sense for me to monitor and adjust the thermostat day to day depending on weather. While I knew all about the technology that goes into making the smart thermostat work, it hadn’t dawned on me to upgrade to this HVAC technology. So when I had to opportunity to get the smart thermostat for a discount, I jumped on it. And I have to say that this sort of HVAC technology does not disappoint in the least. I should have had this smart thermostat for our residential HVAC a long time ago. I’ve already seen about a 15 percent drop in HVAC heating costs this winter. And I haven’t done a single thing other than leave the smart thermostat alone to do its thing.

We weren’t so sure that we really even wanted to build our own house.

Given all the horror stories we’d heard from friends over the years, we thought it might be better to just buy another house.

But the fact that we made so much money from selling our old house really made building a custom home really appealing. When we upgraded the HVAC equipment among a few other improvement we did on the old house, we never thought we’d sell our house for that much. It’s just sort of inconceivable that our home appreciated that much. And it’s a house that we owed exactly nothing on. We’d paid off the house long before we even upgraded the HVAC equipment. So all that money was there to provide for the design we wanted in our new home. And a big part of that was the HVAC equipment we chose. It was the sort of HVAC equipment that we had to find the right HVAC contractor just to get it installed. The geothermal heat pump is really about the most efficient source of heating and cooling one can find. And it’s still the sort of residential HVAC that is super comfortable as well. Actually, the radiant floor heating is a big plus for me. I love this sort of HVAC heating as it’s so cozy and close. But due to how the geo heat pump works, the HVAC contractor really has to know just what they are doing. And we had to hunt down the right HVAC contractor to make all of this come together. But in the end, that’s exactly what happened. That HVAC professional came through for us and we are experiencing the best quality heat and air or our lives.

So why I would even entertain the thought of calling a handyman gives you some idea of just how cheap I can get

I saw the sign several times when I would pass by. It was a handyman who advertised all sorts of home repairs. The heating and cooling equipment were also a part of what he claimed he could take care of. Maybe it was just the fact that I had seen that sign so many times. But when the air conditioning started acting wonky, I thought of calling this guy up. Again, that could be just because his name was front of mind. But it’s also because I look for every way possible to cut the costs around the house. And if I could get the HVAC equipment straightened out for half the price than all the better. At least that’s the sort of base thinking that was happening in my brain. The facts were that I knew that I needed to simply pick up the phone and call the HVAC company. I have used the same HVAC company for more than 15 years. In fact, it’s the only HVAC company I have used since I moved to this area. And those HVAC professionals had never been anything but fair with costs and expert with heating and cooling skill. So why I would even entertain the thought of calling a handyman gives you some idea of just how cheap I can get. It only took a minute for me to come to my senses when it came to calling the handyman about the air conditioning. For sure, as cheap as I can be, I fully understand the value of the expertise only a certified HVAC technician can bring to the table.

There is plenty to worry about in this world.

Sometimes, it’s hard for me to get my head around the fact that we are finishing up the second year of the pandemic.

At least for some of 2021 I wasn’t cooped up inside the air conditioning of my home. I actually even got to go back to work inside the zone controlled HVAC comfort of our office. Those two things have made a big difference on my life. And I think it has also brought me some perspective change as well. I think I found out some things that were much more important than perhaps I had recognized. The fact that my family was safe and we had a house that had heating and cooling, food and electricity to wait out the worst of Covid was a big one. I also realized just how essential that heating and cooling really is. Prior to the pandemic, I thing I paid little to no attention to the HVAC equipment. I changed the HVAC air filter inconsistently and was hit and miss on HVAC maintenance. However, considering how much we depended on the HVAC equipment during the pandemic, I realized just how important the HVAC really is. And so I called the HVAC company and signed up for the HVAC service plan. I definitely wanted to leave the HVAC equipment in the capable hands of the HVAC professionals. There was no other way of seeing it really. I for sure have been lucky up to this point when it comes to the reliability of my HVAC unit. So from here on out, I’m going to stack the odds in my favor with good HVAC service from the HVAC professionals.

It was all we could do to get some food as there was no driving for a day or more

We don’t have much need for a four wheel drive vehicle where we live. That’s not to say that the big four wheel drive trucks are really popular because they are. But we really don’t need all that. The winter where we live hardly needs much help from the heat pump much less needed four wheel drive to get around. However, we did end up buying a vehicle that had front wheel drive and are we ever glad that we did. This past holiday season, my wife and I chose to travel way north to see her parents and celebrate Christmas. The problem was that there was a serious chance of a snow storm. If we were lucky, we’d just beat and be at her mom and dad’s before it hit a bit to the south. Well the best laid plans and all that. Of course, we ended up running right into the teeth of that snow storm. I’m a country boy from the south so all I knew how to do was turn up the thermostat for more heating. My wife is the one who had the experience when it came to driving in the snow. Between her skill and the front wheel drive, we got to a small motel just off the interstate. And there we found a room that had a big wall unit HVAC system. It cranked out the best HVAC heating I have maybe ever felt in my life. It was all we could do to get some food as there was no driving for a day or more. So we just hung out in the HVAC heating and relaxed.
