It was 95°, our windows were up, the car top was down, and the AC was on.

When my husband retired, I swear he went through a second childhood.

  • He said it was time for us to have fun and enjoy her life, but I think he meant it was time for us to do some playing.

One morning he woke me up at 5 AM to tell me he wanted to go shopping. He said he had been thinking about a long time and he finally decided that it was what he wanted to do. I did not know what he was babbling about, since I hadn’t even had coffee and the sun was barely up over the mountain. At 7 AM, he was dragging me out the door. I asked what he was so eager to buy, and he looked at me like I had three heads. I just stood there and stared at him as he told me he had been telling me we were going shopping for a car. We were already in the car and I was pinching my nose when he grabbed my hand. He said he wanted to find a two-seater convertible that only he and I and not even the grandkids could get into. Two weeks later, we were driving around in our brand new cherry red Corvette. It was 95° outside, the car top was down, the windows were up, and the air conditioning was on high. I thought a convertible meant you didn’t need air conditioning. He said when you couldn’t have the windows down; you had to have the air conditioning. I told him we could put the windows down, and he laughed. He told me that no owner of a convertible would be caught driving without air conditioning when it was 95° out and the windows were up.

We needed new air conditioning in our camper.

Every year, before summer arrives, I have a list of chores to complete.

The first thing on my list is to call the HVAC company and have them do an inspection and repair on my outdoor air conditioning unit.

The 2nd to 1st most important chore on my list was to prepare our camper for the summer. There were sure to be some little creatures set taking up housekeeping in our camper during the winter. We had to evacuate all of our non paying guests, and get the entire camper cleaned from top to bottom. Along with all the cleaning and repairing that we had to do on the camper, I also need to inspect the HVAC system. I once asked our regular HVAC technician if he could do the cleaning and inspection of the HVAC system, but he said that he wasn’t familiar with that type of system. I took my camper down to the lot where they sold campers and asked if they had an HVAC technician working. They said they had a regular HVAC Tech who did nothing but work on campers. I made an appointment to have my HVAC system cleaned and repaired on the following day. When I got the call, I thought they were going to tell me that my camper was ready to be picked up, but I was wrong. One of our winter residents had chewed through some of the wiring in the air conditioning unit and it had to be replaced. I didn’t like the extra money it was going to cost me for a new AC unit, but we didn’t want to go camping without it.

Skiing was fun until I got cold.

Knowing they had hot chocolate and places to sit around the fireplace, I found I was getting cold easily.

From the time I was very little mom, and dad were teaching me how to ski. We lived less than a mile away from a ski area, and mom and dad wanted all of us kids to learn how to enjoy the sport. The first time we were out in the snow, I was more interested in making snow angels than learning how to ski. When dad got my skis on my feet, it was too difficult to make snow angels, so I let him teach me. I was so excited over knowing how to go down over a hill and stop without falling that I didn’t want to go inside that first night. Then I realized that once we got inside, we could sit by the enormous fireplace in the middle of the room and drink hot chocolate. I was now excited to get off the ski slopes just to go inside and sit by the fireplace. The second day, I didn’t find skiing as fun. Knowing they had hot chocolate and places to sit around the fireplace, I found I was getting cold easily. I would tell my dad that I was freezing, so he would have to take me inside the building. On the third trip inside, my mom took me. She told me that this was the last time I was going to get beside the fireplace until after lunch. I guess three trips inside, 3 cups of hot chocolate, and half an hour in front of the fireplace were a bit too much for only being out on the slopes for three hours.

Energy saving tips

It was a good thing mom and dad had a king-sized bed.

Nowadays, nearly everyone has a whole home HVAC system and zone control.

When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s, we didn’t have heating in our upstairs.

We counted on one main register that sat in the middle of the hallway to pull enough heat from downstairs to warm our bedrooms. I remember times when my dad would block off the register, mom would put curtains up to the stairwell, and we would all sleep in the living room to stay warm and cozy. It was a camping in the middle of your living room type of night. I remember one particular evening, when it was nearly 20° below zero outside. Our windows were covered with ice, and we couldn’t sleep because we were shivering so badly. We didn’t know the furnace had quit working, but dad did. One by one, the four of us kids crept over to mom and dad’s room and quietly curled up next to mom. It wasn’t until my older sister came over and hopped in bed that we realized daddy wasn’t there. Mom told us to curl up underneath the covers and try to get some sleep while she threw on her robe and headed downstairs. Several hours later, I heard mom and dad talking as they were coming up the steps. Dad was talking about how they had to get a new furnace because he didn’t want to need to go without heat again. Mom agreed about the furnace, and she laughed and asked what they were going to do about sleeping tonight? Dad said they didn’t need a furnace tonight, as they both crawled into the one side of the bed where we hadn’t spread out.

We were grateful for the fireplace when the heat went out during a blizzard.

When we moved back up north, my wife and I were considering having a fireplace taken out of the new home.

The fireplace needed more attention than we had originally thought, and we weren’t sure if we could afford to have it repaired.

After a few discussions and more arguments, my wife and I put the money into the fireplace. She liked the ambience that it could create, and I said that the heating would be nice. We found out just how nice the heating of the fireplace would feel when a blizzard hit our area. Within a matter of six hours, we had 2 1/2 feet of snow with 2 inches of ice on top of the snow. Not only had the blizzard brought down quite a few gigantic trees, but the trees brought the electrical lines down with it. Almost 95% of our area was without electricity. Without electricity, we didn’t have a furnace, because you need electricity to run the furnace. It was then that we realized how grateful we were for the fireplace. When he went out during the blizzard, it was our fireplace that saved our lives and gave us comfort. I’m not sure which one of us was the first one to cave in about keeping the fireplace, but I’m glad we did. Most of the area was out of power for nearly 24 hours. We were lucky to only go for six of those hours without power. Even those few six hours would have been horrendous, if it hadn’t been for the fireplace.

The HVAC company checked all the boxes

Randy was so psyched that we had finally found the right house in such a wonderful area.

The search had been long and tiring. It seemed like we would never find a place of our own. This wasn’t a good place to be since the baby was only two months away. But, fate smiled on us and we got the call from our realtor to go view a house. She knew our situation and went above and beyond to find the right house for us. I was so happy when we walked in and it was exactly what we wanted. The owner wanted to move and had done so many improvements. All we had to do was move in and didn’t need to do any work. All that and the fact that it was in our price range was a true miracle. After two weeks, we moved in and began working in setting up the nursery. This was spring time and we knew summer was not too far away. Randy went ahead to test the HVAC system just to make sure we were all set for the hot season. Having a baby in a hot and muggy home would drive all of us crazy. Thankfully, the HVAC system was okay but we still needed to have it checked by a professional. We didn’t know of any HVAC companies in the area so we went online to do some research. We found several highly rated HVAC companies near us, and one stood out. Not only did it have the best reviews, it also had an all-female team. Nothing about guys, but we were big advocates for women working in predominantly male roles so we chose to give them a call.

What is an air scrubber and why do I need it?

I went to visit a friend last year and see the lovely upgrades he’d done to his home.

We always shared a passion for renovations and I was happy he’d realized his dream.

The house looked so wonderful and all the work had been done to the highest level of perfection. As we were talking, he told me he had even changed the air conditioning system. Instead of the old unit that used too much energy, he got an energy efficient HVAC system. In addition, my friend also got an air scrubber. He tried to explain to me it’s purpose but I still did a little more research when I got home. The air scrubber had me intrigued so I wanted to find out why I needed it in my home. I came across a blog from a specific air conditioning installation and service company with useful information. Basically, an air scrubber is a unit set up in an air conditioning unit to remove all impurities from the air being blown into my home. The minute any contaminants come into contact with the air scrubber, they get neutralized. Not only does this work on air passing through the air conditioner, but all air inside the house. The air gets ‘scrubbed’ leaving you with better indoor air quality. I was never aware of how much contaminants were in the air in my home. It’s only as I read the information in this blog that I realized an air scrubber is such an important part of the AC unit. Shortly after that, I started browsing sites for HVAC supplies to place an order on the best one for my home.

Why do cooling units freeze up in summer?

Have you ever been in your home on a hot summer day and realized something is wrong with the AC.

Before, it was blowing cool air into the house.

But, things have shifted and it’s blowing warm air. You might be tempted to check if someone was messing with the thermostat settings. However, that’s not the reason your AC unit is no longer cooling the house. The most likely reason is your AC unit has frozen even though it’s quite hot outside. An AC professional will find the refrigerant lines encased in ice. This then affects the ability of the AC unit to blow cool air into your lovely home. While it might seem odd, this is a common occurrence with AC units during the hot days of summer. Just hire an AC professional and they’ll help restore the unit back to proper function. Usually, your AC unit relies on temperature, air flow and system pressure to function effectively. If there is any disruption in this delicate balance, you might end up with a faulty AC unit. When there’s disruption in the air flow, for example, the refrigerant lines freeze up. Air flow disruption in AC units occurs due to dirty air filters, malfunction of the blower motor or fan or a blockage in the ductwork. In such cases, the AC professional will have to work fast to clean the system, change the air filter or repair the faulty blower motor. In other instances, the ice forms because of clogged drain lines. Drain lines don’t only leak when they have some blockage, they can cause the refrigerant lines to freeze. Removing all the algae is the best way to get rid of the blockage.

The air conditioning system was affecting my skin

I knew if I told mom about this, she’d send me a million solutions.

My mom has always been obsessed with ensuring she doesn’t age. I remember from a young age, she was always trying the latest skin care routines. Plus, she would spend so much money in beauty shops trying the latest finds in skin care. But, all of these couldn’t stop nature and eventually age did catch up with her. She doesn’t look bad at all but she is still obsessing in the same way. Seeing her so critical of her image made me rebel from a young age when she tried to influence me. I preferred simple routines of soap and water until I was in college. Now, I only do a simple skin care routine and it works perfectly for me. Last summer, I had some work done in my house. It was time to update the old air conditioner that came with the place when I bought it. The whole system cost quite a lot of money but it had to be done since the air conditioner kept needing repair. The HVAC experts came by and worked on the entire air conditioning system for two days. After that, I tested the unit and it worked quite well. After about a week, I began to notice my skin was getting quite dry. I knew if I told mom about this, she’d send me a million solutions. So instead I spoke to a friend who was a dermatologist. She asked me of any changes in my home and I informed her about the new air conditioner. My friend advised me to get a humidifier because the new and powerful system was removing all the humidity from the air causing my skin to dry.

HVAC duct cleaning is quite essential

Having a reliable and energy efficient HVAC unit in your home is quite important.

It’s the best way to keep your home comfortable throughout the year.

A reliable HVAC unit relies on the HVAC ductwork to deliver cool or warm air into the house. HVAC ductwork requires regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure its tip-top shape. That’s why you have to hire an AC specialist to come and perform effective duct cleaning in your home. HVAC duct cleaning removes dust, dirt, debris, and microorganisms like mold. At times, when there’s ideal conditions, mold and mildew can grow in the HVAC duct. If left in place, this multiplies and sends spores into your home which is a serious health hazard. Therefore, the sooner you can get the situation remedied, the better. Apart from cleaning out any gunk in the ductwork, duct cleaning also plays another essential role. As the AC specialists cleans, he al;so checks for any issues with the ductwork like gaps that cause air leaks. These leaks can affect your indoor atmosphere causing certain spots to have cold spots in winter or warm in summer. The best thing to do with leaks is duct sealing which ensures all the air reaches the intended destination. While some people do prefer to do duct cleaning on their own, it’s better and safer to hire an AC specialist. They will come with the right equipment to clean the ductwork and seal any gaps they come across in the entire ventilation system. Lack of duct cleaning can negatively affect how your cooling unit operates and must also go hand in hand with changing the air filter.
