Over the last ten years this house has been slowly but surely falling apart. I try to keep up with as much as I can, but some things are too advanced for me to handle. I can change light bulbs and do a little light carpentry, but otherwise all I can do is sit and watch while the building degrades. Finally I went to the bank and applied for a small loan so I could pay a contractor to do all the work I have been needing for so long. The ceilings in several rooms need to be taken down and replaced with new sheetrock. As that is happening, I need work done on the ductwork for my central HVAC system. I had a full inspection done a couple of months ago, and learned that while my central HVAC system is still in great shape, the air ducts are not. There is extensive damage to the ductwork, caused by the same factors that damaged the ceilings. The contractor will send in a team to repair the structure of the house first, then later send out a second team to install brand new HVAC ductwork. I hired this particular contractor because they custom-build their own air ducts and air vents specifically for the layout of my house. If I am going to pay for all new air ducts, I want them to last for decades. When the work is done the performance of my central HVAC equipment should be better than ever, and I won’t have to worry about the ceilings collapsing any more.

I had to be, because I only had a part-time job and was struggling to pay my living expenses.

After I graduated I got a good job, and I thought those lean days were behind me. Thanks to COVID, a series of bad financial decisions by our government, and a tanking economy, I am back to struggling once again. Now I need to cut back on my spending in every way possible. I am eating Ramen noodles and drinking tap water just like the old days. I also need to reduce my utility bills, which means running the air conditioning less frequently. This is a big one for me, because it’s hot down here and I tend to run the A/C at all times when I am at home. I adjust the thermostat a few degrees when I leave, but I rarely turn it off entirely. Once the HVAC system shuts down the house starts heating up all day long, and it feels like an oven when I return from work. Now I turn off the A/C when I leave for the day. On top of that, I have closed down several of the air vents, so that I only use the A/C in a couple of rooms when I am home. I run the HVAC system less, and use it to cool less space, which should translate to lower utility bills. My husband and I had a fireplace in the living room to help offset the heating bills.

We loved our central HVAC system.

We wouldn’t want to go without central air conditioning during the summer, but the winter was different. It was expensive to run a furnace, and we often lost electricity when the winds whipped around the mountain tops. Without a fireplace, we wouldn’t stay warm all winter. The fireplace offset the heating bills and comforted us when the lights went out and the furnace wasn’t working. Last month, we had a storm that had the electricity off for almost a week. The fireplace was comfortable, and we slept in front of it, on an old pull-out sofa bed. The fireplace went out in the middle of the night, and I was shivering. I didn’t realize how cold and drafty our house could be without the fireplace. I vowed to never get rid of the fireplace, because I also realized why it was so expensive to heat the house. I knew that when spring arrived; I was going to call a contractor and have new insulation installed throughout the house. I wanted the chimney cleaned, and I was going to consider having a new furnace installed. Maybe some of the reason for the expense of running the furnace was because it was almost twenty-five years old. If the insulation and new furnace didn’t help to keep the house warmer, I would have another fireplace installed somewhere else in the house. I just wanted to get my home warmer.

I had always wanted to go to Ireland, where my ancestors came from.

After we retired, my husband and I finally got to take the vacation of my dreams.

We had made plans to stay in an old castle that had been converted into an Air BNB. The castle had no formal heating system, but there were fireplaces in every room. Every morning, someone would come into the rooms and lay fresh wood in the fireplace to keep the heat in the room. They would deliver more wood to the rooms throughout the day. Sometimes it got freezing, and no one but the guests seemed to notice. We were told that being raised in the castle meant that everyone was used to the drafts. I could only imagine what it was like living in the castles in the olden days. It must have been hard to keep warm since most of the turrets didn’t have glass at the windows. I was walking through the castle one afternoon, and had gotten turned around. I heard an odd noise coming from the hallway and realized there were air vents in the walls. There was heat coming from the air vents, and I got more curious. I asked one person I passed in the hall where the furnace was located. She told me there were three furnaces in the castle. One was in a centralized furnace room on each floor. So much for the castle having no formal heating system. The fireplaces were only for the guests. We were paying for the castle experience, while everyone else had modern furnaces to keep them warm.

Since she is going to be turning her garage into some extra living space, my sister is going to need an HVAC system in her garage.

• Whenever they moved into the house where they are living now, there was no HVAC system in the garage.

As a matter of fact, there was not even any ventilation ductwork in the garage at all. After all, no one ever thought that they would be trying to put extra living space into the garage later on. I think that my sister and her husband probably would have built onto their house instead of using the garage if it had been allowed. Their homeowner’s association doesn’t allow any extra square footage to be built on the outside of the house to make the home’s footprint larger. Anyway, they decided that they wanted to put on this extra living space and so they are going to need heating and cooling out there, for sure. They don’t think that they will ever want to spend any time out there if there is no heating and cooling because we have such drastic weather around here where we live. Right now, the garage is freezing and there is no way that anyone could last out there for more than a few minutes. Having a heating and cooling system of some sort is a definite must for them. I think they should install a ductless mini split HVAC unit but they still don’t know what they are going to do. My sister thinks that she would rather run ductwork from the existing HVAC system.

I could not believe how cold it got out there during the wintertime

They have a little propane heating system in the guest cabin outside of my aunt and uncle’s house. When we first went there to visit a couple of years ago, I was so excited that they had this guest cabin outside! It was perfect for me and my two daughters to stay in while we were visiting their house. It was going to save us a whole lot of money because we did not want to have to spend a fortune at a hotel while we were there visiting. We were there in the summer that first time, though, and the heating situation didn’t really matter at that point. The only thing that I was concerned about then was that there was an air conditioning system in the little guest house. Of course, there wasn’t any central air conditioning out there, but there was a window air conditioning unit and that did the trick. It wasn’t super cold in the cabin, but it was cold enough that we were able to feel comfortable during the hot summer nights while we were there. This time when we went out to visit, it was in the winter and it was a totally different story. I could not believe how cold it got out there during the wintertime. The temperature was in the single digits and I thought that we were going to freeze to death out in the guest cabin for sure. However, then I found out that my aunt and uncle had put in a little propane heating system in the guest cabin and that fixed everything.

I actually cannot believe that this has happened. It seems like every single thing that could go wrong with this project has gone wrong for us. It’s almost like we were not meant to build this house at all. Sometimes, I sit back and I think of all the issues that we have had over the past six months and I start to believe that we should not have built this house either! My wife and I have been fighting about every little thing for the past six months, and now I realize why people say that building a house is one of the hardest things that you can go through in your marriage. It is no joke. The fact that we keep having delays happen to us is not helping matters. We have had some issues with the HVAC contractor who is working on the house, and just yesterday we found out that he had ordered the wrong size ductwork for us. We can’t have it installed because it just doesn’t fit the dimensions of our house. Now, we have to ship everything back and start all over again with the heating, cooling, and ventilation portion of the house project. This is going to put us behind another few weeks, and my wife is absolutely furious about it. I can’t really say that I blame her, but being mad about it is not going to help matters. We just have to keep our eyes on the goal and keep moving ahead until we are finally finished.

The HVAC technician that we hired to work on the HVAC season could not fix our furnace for some reason.

• To be honest, I have my doubts that he was actually a certified HVAC technician.

He had a card from his company and everything, and basically he seemed legit, but I just got a weird feeling from him. From the time that he showed up at our house, I just felt like he did not know what he was talking about. Most of the time when you talk to a professional repairman like a plumber, an electrician, or an HVAC technician, they seem to know exactly what they are talking about. They even talk about things that you don’t understand at all. I’m talking about the lingo and the vocabulary that they seem to use without thinking whenever they are trying to describe the repairs and the issues to you as a layperson. Well, this guy, while supposedly being a professional HVAC technician, did not even have the HVAC lingo down himself. He kept saying things that did not really make much sense to me and I just got the impression that he did not really know what he was doing. it turns out that I was right, too! He worked on our furnace for about an hour and a half, but by the time he left, he still did not have it fixed. It was running just as poorly after he left as it was when he got there. I have a bad feeling that we were somehow scammed by this guy.

I am so glad my friend introduced me to having a HVAC service plan.

A few years ago, I had to move in with my friend due to financial issues.

I had just lost my job, and I could no longer afford to live in my home. My friend was actually facing a similar situation. She was having difficulty affording the mortgage on her home, and she was afraid of losing her home. So we came to an agreement that I can live with her and pay rent monthly. At first we were both a little worried that living together would strain our friendship, but if anything it has done the opposite. We have more in common than we originally thought. Anyways, I was surprised when a HVAC worker showed up one day, as I don’t remember her scheduling for HVAC service. This is when she told me she has an A/C service plan, and the appointments are automatic, all she has to do is confirm them. The prices are also much cheaper, with a small monthly fee. Even when we had to get a minor HVAC repair, the price came to less than $20. I was really impressed, my last A/C repair was over a hundred dollars. I was beginning to think more and more about getting a HVAC plan myself. It wasn’t until I moved out a few years later that I decided to get an A/C plan myself, and I have not regretted it at all. It has saved me a lot of money, and the automatic appointments are great.

I was completely shocked when the heating and cooling specialist gave me the news.

I didn’t realize the fragile state of my heating and air conditioning device. Apparently, the machine had been showing signs of going out, and I was completely oblivious to them. I knew the temperatures in our home were a little different, but that was about all I noticed. But I do like to get annual HVAC tune ups every year, and that is when the A/C professional arrived and told me the news. This left me wondering what I was going to do. I didn’t have enough money for a full new HVAC installation. The A/C serviceman stood there looking at me, and I didn’t have an answer for him. I told him I would have to think about it, and he left. I thought about it for a little while longer, and I decided that I was going to call some of my family members and see if any of them are willing to spare a little bit of money to help me get a new air conditioning installation. Thankfully, they all know I am pretty careful when it comes to money, so they don’t have to worry about me never returning it. My sister was kind enough to loan me about half of the cost, and I could afford the other half. I didn’t really want to look at other types of HVAC equipment, I just wanted to get a more modern central air conditioning. I was able to get the same A/C repairman to come out the next day, and prepare for the new A/C installation.
