When should I substitute our Heating and Air Conditioning system?

I have been living in this beach house for the past 20 years.

I don’t see myself moving out of this house any time in the near future-I raised our children here and I hope to host our grandchildren here as well soon.

My experience with this house has been phenomenal, and one thing I constantly tell people and they are surprised to hear is that I have never had to substitute our Heating and Air Conditioning system. That’s right. In the entire 20 years that I have lived here, I have never substituted our central heating or central air conditioning unit. That must be some sort of Heating and Air Conditioning record or something. I have never heard of anyone else being able to say that. Now, to be fair, I have certainly had Heating and Air Conditioning repair calls. I have kept our Heating and Air Conditioning provider really tied up by sending out Heating and Air Conditioning specialists to work with our sleepy aged furnace and/or central a/c. I respectfully have our ductwork cleaned and I constantly change our air filters once a month. Maybe unbelievable service has kept this Heating and Air Conditioning system alive. Even still, I can’t believe how well things have gone and continue to go with this aged Heating and Air Conditioning system! I should ask, though, when do I need to substitute this Heating and Air Conditioning system? It’s still running just fine. Does there come a point where I really just need to get a current Heating and Air Conditioning system or if I should just keep this Heating and Air Conditioning system for all it’s worth. I know that I’ll never have another 20-year Heating and Air Conditioning system and I’m a little distraught about replacing this one. What do you recognize I should do? Should I keep chugging with this Heating and Air Conditioning system or should I substitute our Heating and Air Conditioning system before this one bites the dust?
