Keeping the house moderate by cooking in the living room

I remember going to visit my Grandmother particularly around Christmas time… She lived in the house with thin walls and not entirely wonderful insulation.

She also lived in quite a freezing climate, or at least, it was freezing in the winter.

Mom sometimes wondered and uneasy about how she was keeping moderate on particularly freezing nights, however she had ways. She would consistently be bundled up in several layers when it was cold. She had space heaters and electric blankets and she was entirely careful with the space heaters to avoid any electrical or fire hazards. However, one of her favorite methods to moderate up the house was cooking on the stovetop and baking in the oven. Whenever my wonderful friend and I would visit during Christmas break, my wonderful friend and I would often all congregate in the living room while Grandmother and Mom cooked and baked all sorts of lovely things just as much to have wonderful things to eat as to keep the house nice and warm. Those were some of my fondest childhood memories. On any given visit, Grandmother might be cooking chicken and dumplings on the stove while simultaneously baking a watermelon rhubarb pie. Other times in the day she might be cooking a full-on supper with everything from pancakes to sausage and bacon and eggs and also baking biscuits. It was a lovely way to keep the house warm! Grandmother’s house did have a boiler, however she favorite to use it sparingly. I would say that she did a wonderful job of keeping the house moderate and keeping her guests cozy and well fed!
