Air quality is for your health, not just your comfort

Today we think of HVAC as a way to keep us comfortable while at work, but back then it was about staying alive! This should demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt why ventilation is the most vital aspect of HVAC

Initially the HVAC industry was centered primarily around the V part of the acronym. V stands for Ventilation, and that was most in demand for business owners. Considering the economy of the time, mostly it was major companies that needed ventilation systems. Back then most of the economy was driven by blue collar industries like foundries and processing plants. Places like these needed to have excellent ventilation for the health and safety of their workers. It wasn’t about making them comfortable, it was about keeping them alive while surrounded by dangerous substances. Of course these changes did not happen overnight, in fact it wasn’t until a lot of people had died on the job due to poor ventilation that the new changes were instituted. Back then people didn’t get lawyers and sue the companies for stuff like that. The main reason they started to invest in proper ventilation wasn’t because of lawsuits, or moral reasons, but because they couldn’t afford to have any more workers die! Compare that to the working environment many of us have today, where temperature control and proper air conditioning are mandatory for any job. Today we think of HVAC as a way to keep us comfortable while at work, but back then it was about staying alive! This should demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt why ventilation is the most vital aspect of HVAC. The next time you start to get a little uncomfortable, remember that while heating and air conditioning can keep you nice and comfy, it’s the ventilation that keeps you alive.
