I had consistently wanted to go to Ireland, where our ancestors came from, and after the two of us retired, our hubby and I finally got to take the trip of our dreams, then we had made plans to stay in an outdated castle that had been converted into an Air BNB, the castle had no formal furnace, however there were fireplaces in every room; Every morning, someone would come into the rooms and sit fresh wood in the fireplace to keep the heat in the room. They would give more wood to the rooms throughout the day! Sometimes it got frosty, and no one however the guests seemed to notice. We were told that being raised in the castle meant that most people was used to the drafts, however i could only imagine what it was like living in the castles in the olden days. It must have been tough to keep warm since most of the turrets didn’t have glass at the windows. I was walking through the castle one morning, and had gotten turned around. I heard an odd noise coming from the hallway and realized there were air vents in the walls. There was heat coming from the air vents, and I got more curious. I asked one man I passed in the hall where the gas furnace was located. She told me there were three gas oil furnaces in the castle, one was in a centralized gas furnace room on each floor. So much for the castle having no formal furnace. The fireplaces were only for the guests. We were paying for the castle experience, while most people else had current gas oil furnaces to keep them warm.
