So impressed with the ductless HVAC option

In some ways, I’d been waiting just over five years to hear what the HVAC technician had to say. When the HVAC equipment turned twenty years old, I started a saving account so I would be caught off guard when it quit working. That’s just the worst to have a car or a roof or some sort of serious life essential die and not have some savings going. I learned this the hard way when I was a kid. So when the HVAC professional told me that the HVAC unit was on its last legs, I was more than ready. Wasting no time, I called the HVAC company to see about getting some guidance and putting and HVAC replacement plan in action. That started with the HVAC contractor coming to the house. I thought that was a nice touch since both my wife and I have tough schedules. We both spend pretty much all week inside the zone controlled HVAC of our respective offices. The weekend is for recharging and we trying to limit the amount of adulting that we do. So that doesn’t leave us a lot of time, other than a lunch hour, to get to the HVAC company. Plus, the HVAC contractor was going to do an inspection as well. And that inspection changed our plans right away. The ductwork was original to the house being built. And it was done. That pose a problem since replacing the ductwork would cause a bunch of chaos in the house. So we opted for a ductless multi split system and couldn’t be happier with this choice.

Just glad to be owning my own HVAC

I never thought I’d go in with someone to buy a house.

But these days, it really made the most sense.

My friend and I were both living in sort of not so great apartments in order to save for a downpayment on a home. Along with the weak HVAC cooling in our blazing summer, we both experienced another sort of disappointing challenge. For both of us, the more we saved, the further away the prices of homes became. My buddy and I aren’t exactly the best of friends but we met playing tennis and enjoy each others company. One day as we were soaking up the air conditioning at the tennis club after a particularly challenging set, we started talking again about looking for houses. Turns out we both had been looking at the same place but came up short on the down payment. And it dawned on us right there in all that glorious HVAC cooling that we should think about buying the place together. That way, we’d be out of the apartments and into a home where we owned the HVAC equipment. So the more we talked, the more it made sense. We ended up having an agreement drawn up to protect our interests and bought the place. Once we had the place, we knew that the first thing that had to be done was to replace the HVAC equipment. And since the ductwork was shot and the central air conditioning system had such limited coverage, we went a different way. We took the HVAC contractor’s advice and had a ductless multi split system installed. We love being home owners and building equity instead of just paying rent. And we really love the quality heating and air of this place.

Helping my parents stay financially secure includes ductless heat pump

Whenever I can give back to my mom and dad, I am more than happy to do it.

  • Those two have done just so much for me over the years.

And it’s way more than providing me a home with quality heating and air, food and clothes. For that alone, I owe them a tremendous dose of gratitude and respect. But my parents both really were just so supportive of a kid who might not have been the easiest to parent. Staying still inside the air conditioning of the house just really wasn’t my specialty. I felt like I was chained to my little desk in my room. Studying just didn’t come natural to me. My parents saw that but let me find my passion and then encouraged me to go for it. I owe a lot to my folks for that because that really enabled me to have the confidence to go live my best life. When dad called with the idea of putting in an apartment inside the finished basement of the house, I was all in. The idea was maybe to rent to a grad student type and have a bit of extra income for added financial security. That made total sense to me. We turned to the HVAC professionals for help with the heating and cooling. They suggested using a pair of ductless heat pumps at either end of the basement. Those ductless mini splits really do a great job. And the apartment turned out to be incredible. It’s roomy, has a nice kitchen area and just the best quality heating and air.

Awesome ski weekend and great cozy lodge

I’m so not a cold weather sort of person.

That’s just not my style nor my background.

I’ve seen snow maybe a dozen times in my life and that was on purpose. Living down where I grew up, winter was not about anything but getting out in the sunshine and have fun. There was no need for a snow shovel or a gas furnace. In fact, I think the heat pump came on just a few times a year and really, only in the mornings. But when I did see snow or engage in traditional winter sports, it was on ski trips. My dad was into skiing as he grew up with it before he met my mom. She’s like me and a lifelong heat pump girl. But dad was a bit of a nut about getting to the snow every couple of winters. I remembered the lodge that he rented last summer and looked it up. Sure enough, it was still out there and I decided to go skiing for the first time in forever. That place was almost exactly the same as it had been nearly 2 decades ago. Although each bedroom now had a ductless heat pump for additional heating. I remembered that even though there was that giant fireplace, it was cold going to sleep. Those ductless heat pumps really came in handy these days. Plus, they were so powerful and yet so quiet. I could hardly notice that it at all when the heating would cycle on. Ductless heat pumps are awesome but I’ll stick to my old standard heat pump thanks.

New craft and hobby space thanks to HVAC solution

Over the last couple of years, I’ve made some big changes in my life.

There is nothing like a pandemic to do that for a person.

Finally, I stopped moving so much and was forced to take stock of my life. I had to be inside the air conditioning of my home unless I was outside walking for a long time when the virus hit. I was at high risk because of my poor health. And my poor health was completely self induced. I went from sitting at my desk in the zone controlled HVAC of the office to sitting in my chair at home with the HVAC cooling cranked. There wasn’t much movement other than trading places where I was sitting. Oh and amidst all of that great quality heating and air of the office and my house, I was eating like an idiot. Then throw in a case of beer over the weekend and you can see where that was heading. I’ll be 52 and it’s pretty lucky I’m still here. I’ve lost something like 70 pounds in the last two years just by eating with some sort of sense and moving. It’s the moving more than anything else. I have one of those standing desks inside that zone controlled HVAC of the office. And I just don’t even sit down when I get home. I get to doing something. Recently we put in a sort of hobby and craft spot in the basement. It keeps me busy and it’s fun to share with my wife. I even had a ductless heat pump installed so it’s really an awesome spot.

Coming home is tough but the air conditioning sure helps

It’s been a great stay and I’m thankful

I knew that when the rumor started that the offices with that wonderful zone controlled HVAC would be closing due to the pandemic, I might be in trouble. But I also had some bit of confidence that this company hired me right out of college for a reason. I mean, I spent my time in college with my head in the books. I came to that job fortified with a very specific set of skills. So when my colleagues were talking pinks slips, I was hoping for the best. I really loved that zone controlled HVAC. But like the logic suggests, last one in is the first one out, I was shown the door within a month of working from my apartment. And that apartment was there for just sleeping in purposes. I had purposely gone the very affordable route in order to save my money for the future. So in a way, the company may have done me a favor. Once I got clipped, mom and dad just wouldn’t take no for an answer when it came to coming home. I was not wild about that even though it’s been only 6 years or so since I enjoyed the quality heating and air of that awesome house. It was not without some serious pride swallowing that I said yes to their kind offer. I even got to be the first one to live downstairs in the apartment my dad put together for mortgage insurance. It has the best ductless heat pumps and you can dial in just the perfect amount of heating and cooling. It’s been a great stay and I’m thankful. But I’ll be moving into another cramped apartment as I got a new job with a different company.

Getting so much benefit from air purification

I just had no idea how essential good indoor air quality is to living your best life. Here we were with all this good fortune with a great house and all that quality heating and cooling. But even with the money invested in our residential HVAC and all the HVAC technology, I didn’t address a big part of the picture. I wasn’t doing anything to improve or provide good indoor air quality. Perhaps somewhere in my brain I thought that just having the HVAC unit running sort of helped the air. I know that when I changed the air filter, I could see dust and stuff on it. But really those cheap air filters were protecting the health of the HVAC equipment and not ours. When I finally got the heads up on all of this, I really took a deep dive into just what was the best thing to do. Changing to a HEPA filter was the easiest and quickest way to improve the indoor air. So I did that but I wanted to do more. So I talked with our HVAC professional and he suggested the whole home air purification system. This is a type of air purifier that uses UV light to destroy all airborne contaminants. And it has literally changed the way I feel about our house. The air is perfect. It smells so lovely and is producing the very best indoor air quality possible. And it took all of 24 hours to make that change. Seriously, the indoor air was like reborn overnight. I sure don’t mind the health benefits either.

Ceiling fans help with heating and cooling

I like to thoroughly clean my house over the winter. The winter weather in my local area is extremely cold and snowy. When there’s six feet of snow on the ground and the temperature drops down to negative fifteen degrees, I’m in no hurry to spend time outside. It’s the perfect opportunity to meticulously scrub every corner, crevice and surface of the living space. I move furniture, launder the curtains, sort through drawers and wash windows. I wipe down ceiling lights, walls, baseboards and shelves. I empty the refrigerator, clean the inside of the oven, clean the dryer vent and drain the water heater. This past winter, I set up a ladder in the living room to clean the light fixture. When I climbed the ladder, the temperature was obviously much warmer near the ceiling of the room. Standing on the floor, I was tempted to raise the thermostat setting. Standing on the top step of the ladder, I got sweaty. That told me that the very expensive heat produced by the furnace was rising straight up to the ceiling and not falling back down until it cooled off. I looked into ways to solve this problem and decided to install ceiling fans in the main rooms of the home. I discovered that there are all sorts of sizes, styles and prices of ceiling fans. I was able to customize my choices to suit the decor and needs of the specific room. With a little help from my husband, I was able to handle the installation on my own. During the winter months, I set the ceiling fan blades to spin clockwise. This direction pulls cool air up toward the ceiling and displaces the heat that rises up. In the summer, I revere the direction of the fan blades. Having them spin counterclockwise creates a cool breeze and helps to keep room temperature consistent.

Realizing I need attic insulation

Until recently, it didn’t occur to me that the attic isn’t intended to be nothing more than a storage space.

My house includes a full-sized attic where I’ve piled up totes full of the clothes my kids have outgrown. I have bags of sports equipment, boxes of Christmas decorations, stacks of photo albums and old furniture in the attic. Every now and then, I need to head up to the attic to find something. I’ve always noticed that the space is terribly overheated in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. I didn’t realize this problem was probably costing me a great deal of money in heating and cooling costs. Last spring, when I hired an HVAC contractor to service the air conditioner, I complained about my electric bills. I told him that I was always looking for new ways to tighten up the house and reduce expenses. He offered some suggestions, including a smart thermostat, ceiling fans and attic insulation. I wasn’t sure if the attic was insulated or not. When I checked, I found that there was very little insulation and it showed signs of water damage and rodent infestation. The insulation definitely wasn’t accomplishing anything. With a little research, I learned that the attic is designed to help with the efficiency and comfort of the living space. Heat tends to migrate to cooler areas. If the attic is overheated in the summer, the heat travels into the air conditioned rooms of the house. If the attic is chilly in the winter, the heat from the furnace rises upward. I decided to replace the insulation myself. It was a time-consuming, labor-intensive and absolutely awful job. The air in the attic was super hot, stale and stuffy. The old insulation was dirty and gross, and the new insulation was scratchy. However, replacing the attic insulation has made a worthwhile improvement.

Humidifier solves a lot of problems

The unit uses electroduces to change water into steam and then introduces the moisture into the heated air as it travels through the furnace

There is less moisture in cold air than warm air. I live in an area where cold weather is expected for more than six months of the year. We are familiar with temperatures down to negative twenty-five degrees and bitter wind chills. We aren’t surprised by an accumulation of several feet of snow in a single night. Because of the freezing cold conditions, the furnace runs just about non stop for the majority of the year. Inside the house, the air becomes especially dry. The lack of humidity creates a long list of problems. Because the dry air feels colder, it’s tempting to raise the thermostat setting. This creates a bigger workload for the furnace and leads to higher energy bills. The dry air also aggravates issues with asthma, allergies, eczema and psoriasis. Frizzy hair, chapped lips, coughing, sneezing, congestion, headaches, insomnia and respiratory infection can often be blamed on insufficient humidity. The air can dry out nasal passages making people more susceptible to cold and flu. Plus, recovery times are extended in dry conditions. There is the worry over antiques, musical instruments and hardwood floors, doors and moldings drying out and cracking. I’ve even seen the drywall seams of walls and floors become raised due to the lack of proper humidity. A whole-home humidifier solves all of these problems. There are steam-style, fan-powered and bypass humidifiers available to accommodate different sizes of home. For our larger home, a steam-style humidifier was the best choice. The unit uses electroduces to change water into steam and then introduces the moisture into the heated air as it travels through the furnace. The humidity is distributed to every room in the house, improving the comfort and health of the living space.
