There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need to rely on family or on the hospital staff to take care of you.
There was no way I was going to allow a hospital staff to take care of my father-in-law.
My wife was saying how her brother couldn’t take care of him. He had young children to take care of . He also had a wife who wanted nothing to do with a man who couldn’t even find his way to the bathroom in the morning. I remembered how my father was before he died, and I didn’t think of him as a drudgery. I felt honored to be with him when his time came. That being said, we had very little room in our house, nor did we have a lot of time to get ready for him to move in. I called a local contractor and asked for some help. We had an attached garage we didn’t use. We had stuffed it with nothing but junk. I was thinking it would make a nice in-law suite for my father-in-law. I couldn’t believe how quickly they could turn the garage into a serviceable and quite pleasant apartment. He had a bedroom with an attached bathroom. There was a living room, and a small kitchenette where he could keep snacks and quick foods. We had a new ductless HVAC system installed in the apartment. There was heating and air conditioning throughout. They also had an individual HVAC with ventilation for the bathroom. The best part was that the thermostats were in a system where we could control it with our smartphones.
