It’s hard to be a female HVAC tech

And I was right, they are! Little do they know I was headhunted, and the company not only paid for my HVAC courses, but brought me in a much higher starting rate then others were

As a professional young woman, I get more mansplaining then you can possibly imagine. Not only am I young and new to the industry, but it is a male dominated industry. Many of my coworkers are close to retirement, and are fond of telling me I am the same age as their children, or grandchildren. They are trying to be nice, but they are minimizing me and my work here. I do my best to grin and bear it, after all I am the future of this company and they are on the way out the door. The whole reason I got into the HVAC business was because they were desperate for female employees. HVAC has been a male dominated business since… well, since forever, actually, and the corporate bosses realized that some diversity was needed. So I knew coming in that the old guard A/C techs would probably view me as “cute” and be dismissive of my mind. And I was right, they are! Little do they know I was headhunted, and the company not only paid for my HVAC courses, but brought me in a much higher starting rate then others were. I bet some of these older A/C techs worked for a decade to make what I started off with! This helps take the edge off when they talk down to me, and mansplain the most basic heating and cooling concepts like I am an idiot. That’s ok, I know that the future of HVAC work is female, the future is me, and these guys are stuck in the past.
