Did you suppose that it is suggested to change the batteries in the smoke alarm every year? I must admit that I don’t change those batteries frequently, instead I change them when the alarms start to chirp indicating that the batteries are low.
That is with any device or even our car, I change the batteries when I suppose they are low or after they have died.
