It took some work, but I convinced her the new HVAC system was necessary.
My mom is one of the cheapest people I have ever met. I think a lot of her thriftiness is that she really knows how to bargain with people. She must have been descended from some of the original barterers. Last week, I told her she needed a new HVAC system for the house. I did my best to convince her she had to have at least a new furnace since winter would soon be here, but she refused. She kept telling me that as long as this one was running; she would not replace it. I wasn’t sure what I was going to say after that one, but I knew I had to try. I asked her what I had to do to convince her that a new furnace was a necessity. The one she had would not make it through another winter. She told me she wanted a professional to tell her. I had to laugh because I was a HVAC technician. I was not only a technician, but I was getting my own company. I reminded her of this, and she blew me off. I called a coworker and one man who was going to go into my new business venture with me. He came over to the house and told her she was going to need a new furnace. She told him to give her a quote so she could bargain with him. Once she got the quote, it took her an hour to get him down several hundred dollars and to include free air filters and a two-year maintenance and repair agreement.
